Geological Origin and Vast Dimensions

Located in the arid Karas Region of southern Namibia near the South African border, Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa and one of the most magnificent geological formations on the continent. The Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail is regarded as one of Africa’s premier multi-day wilderness backpacking treks. Covering roughly 85 to 90 kilometres along the boulder-strewn canyon floor from Hobas to the thermal springs of Ai-Ais, the trek takes four to five days of completely self-supported hiking.

Because flash floods and summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C, the trail is strictly open only during the southern hemisphere winter months (May 1 to September 15). Hikers must carry all food, medical kits, and camping gear on their backs, and submit an accredited medical fitness certificate prior to descent.

Ai-Ais Hot Springs and Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

At the southern terminus of the canyon lies Ai-Ais (derived from the Khoekhoegowab word for 'burning water'). Here, natural geothermal springs bubble to the surface at a steaming 60°C, feeding indoor and outdoor therapeutic mineral pools managed by Namibia Wildlife Resorts. The area forms part of the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, an international conservation park shared between Namibia and South Africa.

Seasons, Access and Travel Logistics

Fish River Canyon rim viewpoints can be visited year-round. Winter months (May to September) offer mild daytime temperatures (20°C to 25°C) and cool nights, making rim walks pleasant. Summer months (November to March) bring severe heat in the canyon floor.

The canyon is located approximately 650 kilometres south of Windhoek (about 6.5 to 7 hours by car via Keetmanshoop). Roads leading from Keetmanshoop and Grünau are well-maintained gravel surfaces accessible by two-wheel-drive sedans.
