Drakensberg Mountains

Known in isiZulu as uKhahlamba ('Barrier of Spears') and in Afrikaans as the Drakensberg ('Dragon Mountains'), this majestic mountain amphitheater represents the highest mountain range in Southern Africa, rising over 3,400 meters along the border between South Africa and Lesotho. The Royal Natal Amphitheatre & Tugela Falls

The defining geological wonder of the Northern Drakensberg is the Amphitheatre, a sheer, five-kilometer-wide wall of vertical basalt cliffs rising over 1,200 meters. Plunging down the cliff face from the summit plateau is Tugela Falls, recognized as the tallest waterfall on Earth with a total continuous drop of 983 meters across five distinct cascades.

San Rock Art: Africa’s Largest Open-Air Gallery

The sandstone overhangs and caves of the Drakensberg protect the greatest concentration of San (Bushman) rock paintings in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 40,000 individual painted figures dating back thousands of years depict sacred eland antelopes, trance dances, and shamanic spirit journeys, offering an extraordinary window into indigenous spiritual cosmology.
